Our Heart-Felt Sympathy to Family and Friends of Marion Davis Wright

The volunteers of the Wright B Flyer Inc. are saddened by the passing of Marion Davis Wright on Thursday, May 16, 2013.  She was the widow of Wilkinson “Wick” Wright, the great-nephew of Wilbur and Orville Wright, and the step-mother of Amanda Wright Lane and Stephen Wright.  Our deepest sympathies go to Family and Friends of Mrs. Wright.  More information can be found on page B4 of the Dayton Daily News’ May 18, 2013 edition.

First Mitch Cary-Don Gum Memorial Aviation Scholarchip Awarded

This scholarship was established by the National Aviation Heritage Alliance (NAHA)
to honor the memories of the two Wright B Flyer pilots and engineers lost in an
aircraft accident in July 2010.

The first award of this scholarship was made immediately following the 109th
Anniversary of Powered Flight ceremony held at the Wright Memorial on Wright
Patterson Air Force Base.

The scholarship was awarded to William Daniel (Will) Everett. The $1500 will allow Will to continue his flight training towards a Private Pilots license. Will currently has 17 hours of flight time and has soloed.

Wright B Flyer Inc. also provided Will with an Honorary Aviator Membership which will give him an orientation ride in our 1911 Wright B Flyer look-a-like aircraft.

This scholarship will be awarded annually.

Aerial America Lenses Dayton’s Aviation Heritage from Above

Dayton’s national aviation heritage was in the spotlight Wednesday, Oct. 17, as a production crew for the  Smithsonian Channel’s “Aerial America” TV series overflew several heritage sites for an  upcoming episode.  The flying produced an aerial spectacle of its own between 9-10 a.m. as “Aerial America’s” helicopter took off from Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport with Wright “B” Flyer Inc.’s Wright Model “B” look-a-like airplane and accompanied it up the I-675 corridor for a flyover of historic Huffman Prairie.  The helicopter also made passes over the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the Wright Brothers Memorial, Hawthorn Hill (the Wright family mansion in Oakwood) and the Wright-Dunbar Neighborhood.  The website for “Aerial America” says the series offers rare glimpses of our nation’s most treasured landmarks, all seen from breathtaking heights.  Emily Osborne, coordinating producer for the series, said the crew has been in Ohio for several days, gathering airborne video around Akron, Canton, Marietta, Ohio University in Athens and other locations.  Shooting in Dayton was unique, she said.  Because of its rich and well-preserved history, “Dayton is all aviation,” she said.  The episode including Dayton is expected to air sometime next year, Osborne said.  The Smithsonian Channel features original documentaries, series and programs highlighting America’s historical, cultural and scientific heritage.
